Lion’s mane (Hericum erinaceus), otherwise known as bearded tooth fungus or bearded hedgehog, is an edible mushroom commonly found in East Asian countries that has been used for many years to support brain, nervous system and gastrointestinal health [1]. Bearded hedgehog can support the expression of BDNF protein in the brain, which promotes a good mood that facilitates weight and fat reduction. In a pilot study involving a group of overweight and obese volunteers who followed a calorie deficit diet and supplemented with Bearded hedgehog extract, improved mood, better hunger and satiety control, a decrease in the frequency of overeating episodes and improved sleep quality were observed [3]. Based on observations of participants with normal cognitive function who were given lion’s mane extract, good performance in a short-term memory test was noted, which may suggest a potential beneficial effect of lion’s mane on brain and nervous system function [4].
