Ashwagandha (Latin: Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, is an herb that has been used since ancient times. For centuries, it has been regarded as ‘Rasayana’, or a rejuvenating herb that promotes longevity and slows down the ageing process. It has also been described as an aphrodisiac and thehe ashwagandha root has a particularly strengthening effect. Its Latin species name ‘somnifera’ means ‘sleep-inducing’ [1].

Ashwagandha is known for its strong adaptogenic (to better cope with stress) and nootropic (to improve cognitive function, concentration and memory) effects. Other properties of ashwagandha also include support for healthy sleep, hormonal system function and overall physical fitness, among others.

Studies suggest that taking ashwagandha root extract enhances stress resistance and improves cognitive function and mood in adults – a significantly improved response to stress has been observed in as little as 30 days of supplementation [2]. In addition, it has been shown that ashwagandha may be helpful in alleviating anxiety symptoms by positively influencing, among other things, vitality, concentration and social functioning [3], and that – as a natural compound with sleep properties – it has the potential to improve sleep quality [4]. Studies indicate that ashwagandha root extract – by helping to reduce cortisol levels – may be useful for weight management in people experiencing chronic stress [5].
